First of all the red, orange, and yellow buffs are all designed for heavy to light cutting operations. Furthermore the Yellow, Green (previously Purple), and white buffs are all designed for heavy to light coloring operations.

Due to the heat generated by the red, green, and white buffs they are well suited for use on stainless. While the orange, yellow, and white buffs are primarily for aluminum.
